Location: London, Glasgow, Yorkshire, UK October 2012 As it fights a deepening recession, the British government is looking for new ways to slash its spending. London is now eyeing ten billion more pounds in welfare cuts, amid an already growing wave of discontent from the poorest families that find themselves in the firing line. For the first time in its 93-year history, the Save the Children charity has launched a major fundraising campaign in Britain. "The situation is pretty bleak for children and families out there. Children are having to go without what we'd consider some basic essentials. So for example, new shoes when their old ones have worn out, a warm coat in winter. These are pretty shocking statistics in the UK in 2012, and we believe we really need to take action", explains Save the Children UK campaign manager Helen Beresford. For mother of three Sharon Moir from Glasgow, it is a daily struggle to provide the basics for her kids. "There are times when I've struggled where I have been like, gosh, there's no food there, and I've got no money", she says. Three and a half million children are living in poverty in the UK. And a quarter of their parents say they have gone without meals so their children can eat.
